Returning to Auckland

November 17

Our 2 weeks of camping are almost over so we headed north to take the van back.  Along the way we stopped at some interesting little towns.

Tokorua – known for the ‘Talking Poles Project’, a collection of tall sculptures and art work on display on the main highway

The next town was Putaruru and it had mosaic art embedded in the sidewalks along the ‘Pavement Art Trail’.  We jumped out to have a quick look and then carried on to Tirau where I found a neat little quilt shop.  Also found that the advertising hanging from almost every business was fashioned from corrugated iron.  That included the hearts on the quilt shop, the animals & car on the ‘animal house’, the roses on top of the cafe, the shepherd in front of a church, the sheep & dog that comprised the visitor centre and the car on top of the local garage.

While driving we had noticed a very pretty tree with pink leaves!  I asked someone for the name & was told but then promptly forgot!! The leaves start pink in the spring then turn green.

Next stop was Cambridge, then Hamilton but the most interesting was Raglan – a tiny town on the Tasman Sea where we stopped for lunch and watched some kite surfers and wind powered vehicles.

We also noticed a house there, with a really different design…
