Russell is an historic little town – it was the first capital of NZ (but only for a short period of time). Took a short bus tour and was given interesting info. (I think the bus was as old as the town!) There was a printery established as part of the Catholic Mission. They bound books and still do. Went up to the viewpoint on Flagstaff Hill – so named as it was the hill where an unruly Maori chief kept cutting down the British flag. There was a class of school kids at the top getting a history lesson. There was a big sundial at the top too with an interesting mosaic at the base depicting the Bay of Islands. Gerry found the old town gas station.
Then we carried on through Auckland via a toll road through tunnels Got some good photos of downtown Auckland while on the bridge – and a very large marina.
Our next overnight was at Orere Point on the ocean. Not a nice beach this time – very rocky – but still pretty to look at (including a bird in a Pohutukawa tree).
